Abstract

Guatemala: Economic evolution during 2006 and Outlook for 2007 Abstract: General features of the recent evolution In 2006 the Guatemalan economy grew 4.9%, constituting the most favourable development since 1978. The growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) was brought on by the buoyancy of private consumption, which in turn was supported by the flows of remittances (12% of GDP). In comparison to 2005, inflation decreased from a level of 8.6% to 5.8%, while the fiscal deficit was slightly larger (1.9% of GDP). For its part the current account deficit remained unchanged (5.1% of GDP). This deficit was easily financed in its entirety, which meant that accumulating foreign exchange reserves was possible. Foreign direct investment flows registered the largest increase of the last five years.
