Guatemala: evolución económica durante 2005 y perspectivas para 2006

1. Rasgos generales de la evolución reciente. La economía de Guatemala creció 3,2%, presentando el mejor desempeño del último quinquenio. El aumento del producto fue impulsado por el consumo privado. Por primera vez desde el año 2000 se registró un incremento del producto interno bruto (PIB) por habitante (0,7%). La inflación ascendió a 8,6%, tasa que significó una moderada disminución respecto del 2004 (9,2%). En 2005 no se realizó una encuesta de desempleo; sin embargo, considerando el crecimiento económico, es probable que la tasa de desempleo no haya observado variaciones de importancia con relación a la del 2004 (3,1%) y que la tasa de subempleo se haya mantenido en la elevada proporción cercana al 30% de la fuerza de trabajo. The Guatemalan economy grew by 3,2%, constituting the most favourable development in the last 5 year period. The growth rate was brought on by private consumption. For the first time since the year 2000, gross domestic product per capita grew, registering an increase of 0,7%. The rate of inflation was 8,6%, reflecting a moderate decrease in comparison to 2004 (9,2%). An employment survey was not conducted in 2005; however, considering the growth rate, it would appear likely that the rate of unemployment did not observe important variations in comparison to 2004 (3,1%), and that the rate of informal employment remained high, constituting up to 30% of the labour force.
