Abstract

No século XXI os países da América Latina estão experimentando um aprofundamento de suas democracias, processo acompanhado de reflexão e visão crítica do desenvolvimento e com o crescente convencimento de que este deve concentrar-se na igualdade com uma perspectiva de direitos. Isto supõe enfrentar as desigualdades que persistem na região, em particular aquelas que afetam os povos indígenas, que sempre foram excluídos e discriminados. Implica também garantir o igual desfrute dos direitos humanos das pessoas indígenas e, ao mesmo tempo, o direito a serem coletivos diferentes. Este século se inicia com o reconhecimento dos direitos dos povos indígenas e seu inegável protagonismo nas agendas nacionais e internacionais.
