Abstract

El trabajo describe los principales rasgos de la evolución de la población de las metrópolis o grandes ciudades de América Latina entre 1950 y 1990. Previo el análisis de los atributos demográficos que caracterizan a los procesos de urbanización y de metropolización ocurridos en la región, la discusión se centra: a) las transformaciones demográficas de las grandes ciudades y las fuentes del crecimiento de las mismas; b) los determinantes de las tendencias demográficas latinoamericanas; c) metrópolis y territorio: la expansión explosiva y descontrolada de las grandes ciudades; d) las diferencias socio-demográficas dentro de las metrópolis; la expansión de la población y las condiciones de vida.
