La mortalidad en la niñez en Centroamérica, Panamá y Belice: Belice 1970-1985

Abstract

De acuerdo con la información registrada, Belice se ubica en los países de mortalidad relativamente baja dentro del conjunto de países de América Central. La tasa en el menor de 5 anos es de 8 por mil, la de mortalidad infantil alcanza a 28 por mil y la tasa entre los 1 y 4 anos es de 2,3 por mil. La mortalidad postneonatal sin embargo aun ocasiona el 54 por ciento de las muertes en el primer ano de vida. La principal reducción en el riesgo de morir se ha producido entre 1970 y 1985, periodo en el cual la mortalidad descendió en un 50 por ciento. Se han reducido aquellas causas de muerte que contribuyen a la mas alta mortalidad: enfermedades diarreicas, infecciosas prevenibles por vacunación e infecciosas respiratorias agudas (p17).
