Abstract

Los problemas del envejecimiento han entrado tardíamente en el campo de la política socioeconómica. La gerontología es una disciplina relativamente autónoma cuyo nombre fue acuñado en 1929 por Rylnikov. Los aspectos sociales del envejecimiento se relacionan con las bases demográficas del fenómeno. La búsqueda de correlaciones entre soluciones, características y circunstancias de la población de 60 y más se está constituyendo en un tema importante de investigación. En Costa Rica se han realizado tres trabajos específicos: uno basado en el censo de población de 1984, otro en los registros de salud de la Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social, y el tercero en una encuesta por muestreo.
