La mortalidad en los primeros años de vida en países de la América Latina: Paraguay, 1967-1968

Abstract

La aplicacion de los metodos de Brass y Sullivan, en base a la proporcion de hijos fallecidos respecto del total de nacidos vivos tenidos por mujeres clasificadas por edad, conduce a una probabilidad de morir antes de cumplir 2 anos de 75 por mil nacidos vivos, segun datos de una muestra del 10 por ciento del censo de 1971. Se estudia la mortalidad diferencial segun variables geograficas y educacion de la mujer (como indicador socioeconomico). El nucleo epidemiologico del problema reside en los hijos de mujeres sin educacion o con educacion primaria muy incompleta, que representan el 47 por ciento de las mujeres en edad fertil. Se sugiere que la contribucion decisiva para disminuir esa mortalidad sea una politica que eleve el nivel de vida de los estratos socioeconomicos bajos.
