La urbanización de América Latina: aspectos demográficos

Abstract

Se define como poblacion urbana a aquella que vive en localidades de mas de 20.000 habitantes. Se presentan estimaciones de la poblacion total, urbana y rural. La poblacion urbana latinoamericana se quintuplico y la rural se duplico entre 1920 y 1960. Se trabaja con dos dimensiones de la urbanizacion: el grado de urbanizacion y el grado de concentracion urbana. Para el conjunto de la region, los porcentajes de poblacion urbana y el de poblacion residiendo en localidades de 100.000 o mas habitantes, creciendo de modo tal que en 1960 alcanzaron a 32 por ciento y 23 por ciento respectivamente, es decir niveles superiores a los promedios mundiales. Ademas, un porcentaje apreciable de la poblacion reside en grandes aglomeraciones metropolitanas. En general, en los paises latinoamericanos, esos indices muestran un grado de concentracion de la poblacion urbana mayor que de cualquier otra region, desarrollada o en desarrollo del mundo.
