America Latina: algunas consideraciones demograficas del proceso de metropolizacion, 1900-1960

Abstract

La limitacion de la informacion disponible, reduce las posibilidades metodologicas de deteccion de areas metropolitanas en America Latina, al uso de ciertas definiciones operacionales que consideran ccriterios de densidad e interaccion espacial, distinguiendo e nucleos y aglomeraciones metropolitanas. Individualizadas de este modo, se observa que su distribucion geografica en el continente es marcadamente periferica, con toda seguridad, respondiendo a la orientacion hacia afuera de las economicas regionales. Sin embargo, en esta distribucion es facil descubrir tres agrupamientos diferentes derivados de relaciones y situaciones historicas particulares. Se hacen algunas consideraciones sobre la evolucion demografica de las areas metropolitanas durante el siglo XX, destacandose la incidencia del ritmo de crecimiento de la poblacion total y su tendencia a concentrarse en un reducido numero de localidades, cuya velocidad de crecimiento supera en mucho el valor medio regional.
