Resumen y aspectos destacados del Simposio sobre Migración Internacional en las Américas

Abstract

Este documento es un resumen de cada una de las ponencias -y sus respectivos comentarios- presentadas en el Simposio sobre Migración Internacional en las Américas, celebrado en septiembre de 2000 en San José de Costa Rica. Las contribuciones están ordenadas de acuerdo a las siete sesiones de trabajo contempladas, y son acompañadas por una síntesis de los aspectos más destacados. Las sesiones abarcaron los siguientes temas: a); tendencias y patrones migratorios en las Américas, b); relaciones entre migración y desarrollo, c); gobernabilidad de la migración y diplomacia multilateral, d); importancia económica y social de la migración y, e); derechos humanos de los migrantes. En la nota introductoria se destaca la importancia, originalidad y propósitos que tuvo la reunión, así como la riqueza de los trabajos presentados y las amplias repercusiones que tienen los movimientos migratorios en el continente. Esta publicación forma parte de las actividades de difusión de los resultados del Simposio y tiene el propósito de colaborar al establecimiento de una base teórica y empírica de conocimientos que contribuya a fundamentar en forma adecuada el tratamiento de la migración internacional en las Américas durante los próximos años; todo ello inserto en un marco de diálogo, cooperación e investigación permanente sobre los temas migratorios.
