Dinâmica das Desigualdades Regionais no Brasil

Abstract

This paper presents a Neoclassical Model of equilibrium between per capita GDP of two regions concluding that there is a tendency to stable regional inequality, differently from what has been argued on the convergence literature. Additionally, it forwards a time series approach to test the hypothesis of convergence in the period between 1939 and 2007 for Northeast and the rest of the country, in contrast to the cross section growth regressions normally used to test this hypothesis. The tests indicate that there was a stable equilibrium, but with some structural breaks within the period, or no convergence of per capita GDP of Northeast and of the rest of Brazil.
