Abstract

Present paper is aimed to the environmental policies illustration of three cities awarded as European Green Capitals in recent years, with a focus on air quality policies. In fact, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Stockholm are judged to be excellent cities, not only referring to urban environmental quality, but also – more in general – to quality of life. Moreover, as said by European Commission, a high quality urban contributes to make Europe a more attractive place to work and invest. The paper starts with a reconstruction of the European programmatic context where cities happen to act. Then, three case studies are analysed, represented by urban centres selected as best practices in the field of environmental and air quality policies. In the end, we try to lighten important elements of the experiences evaluated, in order to transfer them in Italian context
