Abstract

The metaverse offers an environment for immersive collaboration for the constantly growing number of virtual teams (VTs). However, there still needs to be a greater understanding of the willingness to use the metaverse from the perspective of VT leaders and their subordinated VT members. Against this background, we conducted a quantitative study (N=249) comparing these perspectives. We found significant differences between both groups by adapting the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to the research context. The key findings indicate that social presence is critically important, particularly for VT leaders, and it even surpasses performance expectations in significance. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of privacy concerns, which are notably significant for VT members but not for VT leaders. Thus, our research offers new insights for research, and organisations can boost users’ willingness to use the metaverse.
