Concentración o desconcentración del mercado de telefonía móvil de Colombia

Abstract

Desde sus inicios, el mercado de la telefonía móvil en Colombia ha presentado periodos de alta y baja concentración según el proceso de compra, fusiones y la libre entrada de nuevas empresas prestadoras de este servicio. Hoy día, aunque existen 9 operadores, todavía este mercado se considera oligopólico porque la demanda se encuentra concentrada en tres empresas dominantes: Comcel (que ahora pertenece a Claro), Movistar y Tigo. Cabe anadir que ahora dos nuevos operadores, Virgin Mobile y ETB, conocidos también como operadores móviles virtuales (OMV), utilizan la red de Movistar y de Tigo, respectivamente, por la ausencia de espectro y su baja capacidad financiera para adquirir esta infraestructura de manera independiente. A pesar de que en los últimos 5 anos en el mercado de telefonía móvil ha disminuido el nivel de concentración, luego de las subastas realizadas y la nueva participación de empresas, los precios bajos de los nuevos operadores y la mala prestación del servicio de las empresas dominantes han llevado a los usuarios a cambiar de operador, pero aun así la demanda sigue concentrada en Comcel, Movistar y Tigo.
