Abstract

Abstrac: Until recently, international migration in Colombia received little attention from the academic circles. This paper contributes to the scarce analysis of this phenomenon, witha detailed characterization of immigrants in our country as well as of Colombianemigrants abroad. In sum, as most countries in Latin America, Colombia is an emigrantcountry. The most important destination countries are the United States, Spain,Venezuela and Ecuador. The analysis shows that economic factors are the maindeterminants of Colombian emigration. Variables such as the per capita income gap, economic cycles and labor market indicators affect the decision to migrate. In addition, the escalation of the armed conflict is another important element to be considered.
