Abstract

Abstract: This paper examines the recent increase in the size and importance of Colombia´s informal sector in the economy and studies its effect on efficiency. Using microdata from the Encuesta de Microestablecimientos, implemented by DANE for the years 2002-2003, we characterize the informal micro-firms. Estimations show that larger and older firms are less likely to be informal. Firms in the services sector (when compared to the retail sector) also have a lower probability of informality. As for the consequences of informality, results reveal that informal firms have lower income and less fixed assets, even though there is no difference in profit.
