Características del cultivo del tabaco en Santander

Abstract

La producción comercial de tabaco en Colombia, se remonta a la época de la Colonia y se ha constituido a través de los años en fuente generadora de empleo e ingresos para la población campesina. La cadena productiva de este bien inicia en el eslabón primario, por la producción y el procesamiento de la hoja de tabaco y en el industrial por la fabricación de cigarrillos. El cultivo de este producto se concentra básicamente en los departamentos de Boyacá, Caldas, Cesar, Huila, Nariño, Norte de Santander, Quindío, Valle del Cauca y Santander, este último considerado como uno de los mayores productores de tabaco en Colombia, con cerca del 50% de la producción de tabaco negro. El sector tabacalero colombiano ha venido enfrentado una política tributaria y arancelaria muy exigente, además de un creciente contrabando que ha ocasionado una competencia desleal y ha generado un conflicto social enorme, representado en los graves problemas de salud que produce su consumo.
