Banano Y Revaluación En El Departamento Del Magdalena,1997-2007

Abstract

El objetivo de la presente investigación es estudiar el comportamiento de la economíabananera del departamento del Magdalena durante la última década (1997-2007) yanalizar los efectos que ha tenido la revaluación del peso sobre este sector económico.En este período, la actividad bananera arrojó algunas cifras preocupantes y otrasesperanzadoras: de una parte, el área cosechada, la producción y el valor de real de lasexportaciones disminuyeron. Pero también, el precio implícito de la fruta en dólares fuesuperior en Magdalena que en Urabá durante toda la década de estudio y es la únicazona colombiana donde se produce el banano orgánico de exportación. Así mismo, estazona presentó los rendimientos más elevados por hectárea durante algunos anos. Almejorar el rendimiento por hectárea (mayor productividad) los bananeros compensaron,así fuera parcialmente, la disminución de sus ingresos ocasionada por la revaluación delpeso. El futuro de los bananeros del Magdalena debería ser el cultivo de banano orgánicoy el comercio justo, ya que el banano convencional está expuesto a unos márgenes deutilidad muy pequenos.
