Historia, geografía y puerto como determinantes de la situación social de Buenaventura

Abstract

Buenaventura no sólo es uno de los puertos más importante de Colombia, sinoque también hace parte del Valle del Cauca, uno de los departamentos másprósperos junto con Antioquia y Cundinamarca. Sin embargo, y pese a estascaracterísticas, es uno de los municipios más pobres del país. Este documentohace mención de al menos tres particularidades que han incidido en la actualsituación socio-económica de Buenaventura: las características geográficas, ellegado histórico y el puerto. Las dos primeras han sido determinantes negativos,retrasando el proceso de crecimiento y desarrollo de la ciudad, y la tercera hainfluido en forma positiva. Vale la pena mencionar que una de las causas de lapobreza en la ciudad es el alto desempleo. Sin embargo, no es posible reducirloúnicamente a través de las actividades portuarias. Existen otros importantessectores productivos con gran potencial, tales como el forestal y el pesquero, loscuales podrían absorber gran parte del exceso de la mano de obra.
