Abstract

→ Read the full report The democratisation of Internet use has considerably changed the way we access information about the products and services we consume. It is now possible to access a vast range of products in just a few clicks, with increasingly diverse and competitive delivery methods. This new economic and logistical model for retailing is leading to an increase in goods vehicle traffic in residential areas. The potential increase in traffic and the logistical footprint of the market - the so-called last-mile issue - is causing growing concern in cities. A CIRANO study (Meloche et al., 2025) examines these issues and suggests that regulating e-commerce and the resulting home deliveries is not as easy as we might think.
