Attirer les médecins de famille en région ? Oui c’est possible

Abstract

→ View the full report Our provincial healthcare system promises universal and free access, but the distribution of general practitioners makes access to that healthcare unequal. We know that not having timely access to appropriate care can lead to severe health problems, particularly for those more vulnerable. In 1975, the Quebec government introduced incentives that aimed to influence general practitioners on their choice of where to practice. A CIRANO study (Fortin et al., 2025) reveals that the measures introduced, which tried to draw family doctors away from Montreal toward remote areas, appear to have achieved their desired outcome. This is particularly important given that people living in remote or isolated regions often have higher healthcare needs and live further from hospital centres than the general public. → Consulter le rapport complet Malgré un système de santé promettant un accès universel et gratuit, on observe des inégalités importantes dans la répartition géographique des omnipraticiens du Québec. Ne pas avoir accès à des soins appropriés en temps opportun peut engendrer des problèmes de santé sévères, en particulier chez les personnes vulnérables. Face à un tel enjeu, le gouvernement du Québec a introduit dès 1975 diverses mesures incitatives dans le but d’influencer le choix du lieu de pratique des omnipraticiens. Une étude CIRANO (Fortin et al., 2025) montre que les mesures mises en place pour attirer les médecins de famille hors de Montréal et en région semblent avoir eu l’effet escompté. Ceci est d’autant plus important que les personnes vivant dans les régions éloignées ou isolées ont souvent des besoins de soins de santé plus élevés et vivent plus loin des centres hospitaliers qu’ailleurs.
