Recent Improvements to the Integrated Longitudinal Business Database (ILBD)

Abstract

This note describes recent improvements made to the Integrated Longitudinal Business Database (ILBD), which is available to researchers in the Federal Statistical Research Data Centers. We detail five key changes to the methodology, as well as their implications for the resulting datasets. Compared to previous versions of the ILBD, there are significant changes in the number of unique nonemployer firms included in the data as well as in their dynamics over time, namely their propensity to transition to employer status. The new files replace the previously existing datasets from 1977-2016 and introduce new versions for 2017-2018. All ILBD files now include identifiers that allow linkages to the new version of the Longitudinal Business Database, released in 2020.
