Abstract

Este informe pretende describir el problema fundamental de desigualdad reflejado y sostenido por el uso en EE.UU. de etiquetas sólo de texto y en inglés. Nuestra investigación demuestra una discriminación lingüística innegable en las advertencias de salud sobre el tabaco. El uso de etiquetas de advertencia escritas en inglés y sin dibujos ha creado una grave brecha en la conciencia pública con respecto a los efectos en la salud del fumar para las personas que no hablan inglés o con niveles de alfabetización limitada. Las consecuencias de este obstáculo a la información son mortales para estas comunidades. Este informe consta de tres apartados. El primero resume la historia y la condición actual de las etiquetas de advertencia sobre el tabaco en los Estados Unidos y describe el problema de la discriminación lingüística. El segundo deslinda la tendencia internacional hacia las etiquetas de advertencia a base de pictogramas. En el apartado final presentamos nuestra recomendación de acción legislativa que pudiera resolver el problema actual de discriminación lingüística y protección desigual bajo la ley.
