Japan's International Investment Position at Year-End 2004

Abstract

Japan's international investment position (IIP) (outstanding amount of external financial assets of residents in Japan minus outstanding amount of external financial liabilities of residents in Japan) recorded a net asset position of 185.8 trillion yen at year-end 2004. The net asset position rose for the first time in three years, increasing by 13.0 trillion yen or 7.5 percent from year-end 2003 to register a new record high, from the previous record high of 179.3 trillion yen registered at year-end 2001. This reflected the fact that the growth in external assets exceeded the growth in external liabilities due mainly to the increase in reserve assets (for the sixth consecutive years) and in outward direct investment assets (for the first time in three years).
