Abstract

This paper aims at pointing out the importance of the institutional setting in the explanation of both the level and the growth rate of the Uruguayan economy in the last fifty-five years. In order to do so, a theoretical model of technological transfer is developed in which institutions in the productive process are explicitly incorporated and then sources of growth are analyzed. The strategy consists of adjusting basic inputs in order to obtain a better measure for the total factor productiviy. Physical capital is adjusted by its use and human capital by its quality. Then, the role of institutions is studied.
