El cultivo de ñame en el Caribe colombiano

Abstract

El ñame (Dioscorea) es uno de los seis géneros pertenecientes a la familia de los Dioscoraceae y es originario de África y Asia. En Colombia la producción de ñame se ha ubicado específicamente en la región Caribe, donde se ha constituido como producto clave en la dieta de la población de esta zona. En 2010, Colombia se ubicó entre los 12 países con mayor producción de ñame a nivel mundial y ocupó el primer lugar en rendimiento de toneladas por hectárea sembrada. Aunque su principal uso es el alimenticio, varios estudios han demostrado su utilidad en la industria farmacéutica y la fabricación de bioplásticos. Sin embargo, en Colombia no se encuentra evidencia del aprovechamiento de este producto en otras áreas diferentes a la alimentación.
