Abstract

El estancamiento económico experimentado por la Nueva Granada al iniciarse el período republicano fue especialmente crítico en la ciudad de Cartagena, y se acentuaría a lo largo del siglo: la pérdida de sus privilegios coloniales como puerto y plaza fuerte del reino; la larga permanencia de una fuerza militar en su territorio cuyos gastos era incapaz de afrontar; la destrucción de la producción agrícola y ganadera causada por la guerra; la innavegabilidad del Canal del Dique; el notable descenso demográfico; la pérdida de su liderazgo portuario al promediar el siglo, son algunos de los factores señalados que incidieron en su depresión económica y en su tardía recuperación.
