Abstract

This paper offers a reasoned synthesis, using interviews with industry experts, of the key elements characterizing the current state of the Italian automotive market and its evolution in the context of the green transition, with reference to both vehicle production and demand. The findings highlight several factors that could complicate this transition for the Italian automotive industry, including: the traditional specialization in technologies being rendered obsolete by electric vehicle advancements; the limited development of the electronics and software sectors; the significant reliance on a single final manufacturer, which only recently began diversifying its investments in electric vehicles; and the small average size and limited propensity for collaboration of national firms. Furthermore, the share of electric vehicle registrations remains lower in Italy than in the leading benchmark countries.
