Abstract

Congress directed the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to perform an in-depth study of egg pricing in the sixties. Proposals suggested by this study were implemented. Because the majority of activity associated with this study has been accomplished, and the structure of the egg industry has continued to change, segments of the egg industry wanted to review and discuss shell egg price discovery. Two agencies--the Agricultural Marketing Service and the Economic Research Service--of USDA sponsored a Shell Egg Price Discovery Symposium on September 2, 1987. Participants from industry, Government, and the academic community provided an overview of shell egg pricing.
