The Role of Railroads in Hauling Farm Products

Author

  • Ulrey, Ivon W.

Abstract

Report Summary: The volume of farm products hauled by the Nation's railroads has held about constant since 1947. Revenues for hauling farm products generally increased until about 5 years ago. Since then they have declined. This record of stable traffic volume and declining revenues in the last 5 years results from many causes. The chief depressing factor on rail revenues has been the sharp reductions in rail freight rates where competition from truck and barge transportation has been keen.
