Abstract

Excerpts from the report: Some improvement in demand for farm products, higher average prices, and larger farm cash income lighten the farm outlook for 1940 as compared with 1939. Practically all groups of farm commodities will share in the increase in income, but improvement may be more pronounced for meat animals, dairy products, poultry, eggs, and vegetables than for cotton and wheat. Some commodities may also benefit from increased foreign demand—particularly hog and dairy products. Prices received by farmers probably will be higher relative to prices paid than during the last 2 years. Farm wage rates and other production costs may average a little higher than in 1939, but receipts minus expenditures will be larger. Farm families probably will have higher net incomes—money and "in kind"—in 1940 than in 1939.
