Multiquart Containers--Their Significance in Dairy Cooperatives

Abstract

Excerpts from the report: Significant changes have occurred in fluid milk processing and merchandising during the past 20 years. We have seen the adoption or increased use of such methods and operations as every-other-day delivery, homogenization, pasteurization, vitamins, and milk vending machines. But the most revolutionary change has come about in the use of paper and multiquart containers--1/2-gallon and gallon--for packaging milk. Increased use of these multiquart containers, which is likely to continue, has been beneficial for both the milk industry and the consumer. With these factors in mind, the Farmer Cooperative Service made a survey in 1957 of all dairy cooperatives distributing fluid milk. The purpose of the survey was to examine many of the aspects regarding the use of multiquart containers by fluid milk distributing associations and to report the findings for the assistance and guidance of these and other milk distributing firms. This report discusses the various practices of the concerns surveyed, some problems associated with using multiquart containers, and opinions of managers regarding these containers.
