Statistics of Farmer Cooperatives, 1958-59

Abstract

Excerpts from the report: The 1958-59 survey of farmer marketing, farm supply, and related service cooperatives showed a substantial increase in the total dollar volume of business of cooperatives, a small increase in memberships, and a continuing downward trend in the total number of cooperatives. Total gross value of farm products marketed, farm supplies handled, and receipts for services performed by cooperatives amounted to more than $15.2 billion. Compared with $14 billion in the previous year, this represented an increase of 8.4 percent. Total net volume, after eliminating duplication resulting from interassociation business, amounted to almost $11.7 billion. This is an increase of 9.2 percent over the net business of $10.7 billion in 1957-58. The total number of memberships increased by 72,095 in 1958-59 and amounted to 7,558,550. The number of cooperatives decreased from 9,735 in 1957-58 to 9,658 in 1958-59, representing a net decrease of 77 associations.
