Abstract

Excerpt from the Purpose of the Study: This study provides a socioeconomic profile of selected coal areas of the Northern Great Plains. Potential problems that may arise from coal development are identified and measured. The report covers such items as historical and recent trends in population, income, and employment for the region as a whole, and for selected areas and towns within the region. Data for the region are compared with data for the entire United States and all U.S. nonmetro counties. The report makes wide use of data from the Census of Population. The Federal State Cooperative series of county population estimates are used to measure 1970-74 population change and components of change.
