Abstract

Excerpts from the report: Farmers' investments in 1975-77 to enhance the quality of their land or expand their land base are analyzed in this report. Such information is necessary for monitoring the quality and quantity of U.S. cropland, one of the most basic components of U.S. food production. The data were collected through 10 "follow-on" surveys of the 1978 Landownership Survey, the first attempt since 1946 to survey ownership and land use at the national level. To put the survey data in a better perspective, we have included a regional distribution of land uses and a national overview of landownership.
