Abstract

Excerpts from the report: How much water will the farmer in the West have for his crops? How much will be available for industry and for power? Will floods be a problem? Answers to these questions come from measuring the snow on the watersheds. In the West much of the streamflow comes from melting snow on the high mountainous watersheds. The best way to forecast the amount is to measure the snow. Since it is not practical to measure all the snow in a watershed, snow surveyors take a series of samples at key locations to measure the depth and water content of the snow.
