Rural Industrialization: A Summary of Five Studies

Abstract

Excerpts from the report Purpose: Studies summarized in this report attempted to provide some insight into the relationship of the industry and the rural community. Interest centered on the personal and family characteristics of individuals hired by rural industries and the effects of industrial development on incomes and level of living. Another question probed was how industrialization affected family participation in social and community organizations and activities. Information on the farming operations of part-time farmers was obtained. The reaction of plant employees was compared with the reaction of other residents of the rural community to measure differences in attitudes and effects of rural industrialization on two occupationally divergent groups within the community. Information was desired to serve two interested groups: (1) Federal and State agencies that have responsibilities for area development and (2) rural communities that have undergone some degree of industrialization in recent years or those planning for industrial development.
