Changing Shipping Patterns on the St. Lawrence Seaway: With Emphasis on United States Grain Exports

Abstract

Report Preface: Major groups associated with export trade have a strong interest in the effect of the improved Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Seaway on commodity movements in both domestic and export trade. Past studies by the Department of Agriculture on the St. Lawrence Seaway emphasized the potential savings in transportation costs in overseas trade for grain. Another study dealt with the possible impact of the Seaway on location of port elevators in the United States. The present study evaluates the traffic record of the new waterway, with emphasis on grain movement, since it opened to large ocean-going vessels in 1959. Attention is given to the total traffic volume that might be generated on the new waterway by 1968.
