Abstract

-----------------------------------------------------In agriculture Paulo were recorded in some years of the 1990s, significant productivity gains. Highlighting the average earnings of productivity that were about two times higher than the national average. Thus, The objective of this study was to measure total factor productivity (TFP) in growing cotton, rice, beans, corn and soybeans, for the state of São Paulo, from 1985 to 2001. Specifically, we sought to verify whether the gains in crop productivity Featured are coming from efficiency gains and, or, technological change and if these gains are higher for the period following the opening of the Brazilian economy. For this, used the models Data envelopment analysis (DEA). The results showed gains for both technical efficiency as technological change. Further, for periods after the opening of the Brazilian economy was verified larger indicators technological changes, particularly for export crops. Thus it was possible conclude that trade liberalization had a positive influence on agricultural TFP State São Paulo.
