Abstract

------------------------------------------This article summarizes a wider research developed in 2006/2007, with the objective of divulging recent information on the Brazilian northeastern poultry, with prominence for its strengths and vulnerabilities. It was adopted the commodity system approach, using primary information gotten in interviews with some important actors, complemented by secondary data. The main vulnerability of Bahia, Pernambuco and Ceará states (this paper focus) is in the maize and soybean supply for animal feeding. The grain production at the northeastern “Cerrados” (Bahia, Maranhão and Piauí) is contributing to reduce the problem, but the transport infrastructure is not the ideal yet and, sometimes, it is necessary to import. The independent production is predominant in the Region, but the integrated production dissemination is providing a new dynamics to the activity, mainly in Bahia. The commercialization of chicken meat (frozen or chilly) has grown, partially fulfilling the regional consumption. However, a considerable parcel of chickens is commercialized alive, what will probably face difficulties with the National Poultry Health Program implementation.
