Abstract

As a consequence of the continuous growth of poultry breeding in Brazil, for meat and egg production, there is a concomitant increase in chicken housing and, therefore, there is an increase in the residues related to the incubation of fertile eggs. In the State of São Paulo, however, it was recently created the Law number 12.300, of 16 March 2006, which imposes that hatchings shall give an adequate destination to residues. The cost of residues management opens the opportunity of studying new alternatives that eventually can aggregate value to the product, making possible its commercialization. The aim of this study was to analyze the destination of residues of hatchings of the State of Sao Paulo. A group of five representative companies was interviewed. The conclusion is that the companies are not in accordance to current legislation. Therefore, they may incur inspection risks and do not take advantage of eventual economic benefits of a more rational use of residues.
