Abstract

Apesar disto, constataram-se problemas relevantes que ainda merecem um melhor equacionamento dentro do mercado de trabalho assalariado da cana-de-açúcar, especialmente os relacionados com a exploração e com o desrespeito aos direitos trabalhistas dos empregados.------------------------In this paper we analyzed the evolution of some agricultural employment quality indicators in the sugarcane crop over 1992-2006, focusing on the traditional areas of production: Northeast and São Paulo State. One synthetic index was built for the permanent and temporary employees. The Employment Quality Index (EQI) was built assembling 14 indicators aggregated in four dimensions: employees’ educational level; employment degree of formality; main work income; and benefits received by the employees. The results showed that important improvements took place in the EQI in this period for all the workers’ categories. In spite of the important progresses in the employment quality, there are still some problems in the salaried labor market in the sugarcane crop, mainly the ones related to the labor rights.
