Abstract

The current Thünen Report documents the contributions and discussions at a workshop on the „Reception and Integration of Refugees in Rural Areas“, which took place on March 6-7, 2017 at the Thünen Institute in Braunschweig. A central goal of this workshop was an intensive exchange on the state of research and the most important future research questions on this topic. The invited participants were scientists who have already done empirical research on this topic or who are currently working on it, including persons with practical integration experience, to ensure the inclusion of the research into practice. The lectures and discussions comprised four blocks: 1) specifics of and greatest challenges for rural areas in the reception and integration of refugees; 2) the perspective of refugees on rural areas; 3) the role of local and regional policies for integration and settlement perspectives for refugees in rural areas, as well as 4) the role of social involvement and acceptance in the local society. These four topical blocks were addressed with a standard approach beginning with an opening report, then comments from a scientific and practical perspective, ending with an extensive discussion.
