Abstract

The traditional method of delivering farm business management training courses is meeting the requirement of fewer andfewer farm managers. Learning concepts and developing skills just-in-case ’ they will be used is being replaced by just-in-time ’ learning and information access. This paper documents the shift in extension client interest; describes the components of the just-in-time ’ learning model with its foundations in human performance technology research; and links to the concepts of knowledge management on the part ofextension agencies. Finally, examples of farm management development activities using this new model in Alberta, Canada are illustrated Examples include development of a 'community or discussion' web site - Agri-vilie, an information delivery web site - Ropin' the Web, and biannual newsmagazine - Right Now. In the authors ’ opinion, the just-in-time1 conceptsform the basicfundamentals of effective management development extension programs of the future.
