Abstract

Since the beginning of the eighties prices received by farmers have decreased sharply in Brazil The country economy was relatively closed to the rest of the world with just a small percentage of its GDP going to foreign countries. Beginning in the early nineties, the economy started a process of opening its frontiers to foreign trade. This study addresses the problem situation of how farmers adjusted their business to the new competitive environment they faced. A questionnaire was applied to a sample of farmers of the Vera Cruz and Garca regions of Sao Paulo State who have been farming since 1980. The region, initially specialized in coffee production, changed into a more diversified area. Other findings show that several modern management techniques were used, both to maintain profits and to reduce risks associated with farming, as a result of increased competition.
