Farm Output in Sub-Saharan Africa - Management for Increased Production in the 21st Century

Abstract

Africa is the continent with the greatest potential for expansion of agricultural output through improved management practices. The writer has almost thirty years of experience of working in Eastern and Central Africa, coinciding with the emergence of the newly independant nations in that region. Great changes have taken place during this time in the agricultural industry and some of those are described in particular at farm level. The roles of both the private commercial sector and the subsistance producers are outlined and attention is given to resources and constraints which contribute to present management practices. Finally, an analysis of the potential for increased production is presented, taking into account global developments and showing how management may need to adapt to realise this potential.
