Small-Scale Cooperation in Agriculture

Abstract

Lately Norwegian farmers have established cooperatives in many different areas. The authors of this paper are coordinating a project in Norway called "Cooperation in Agriculture". The aim of this project is to facilitate for such cooperation. The objective of this presentation is to describe different types of cooperation within different part of the farming community. Disadvantages and advantages with cooperation will be presented. The main point with cooperation is that it works in practice. Disadvantages may in many cases be reduced and there are many ways to reduce the disadvantages. A key word in this connection is formalization. VJe will therefore discuss various company structures, contracts and bylaws. Farmers who want to establish cooperation will often need professional assistance. In this connections some references may be useful.
