Abstract

An analysis of four new production systems for sows and weaners with an improved animal welfare and reduced capital shows, that the new production systems are competitive to the traditional systems with fixed sows. The most significant difference between the production systems is the rate of return on the total capital invested, where the outdoor systems have close to a 24 percentage rate of return, which is roughly five to eight percentage points higher than for the other systems. The low capital input for outdoor systems (only one third corresponding to traditional inddoor systems) and a very simple technical set up makes it possible for the farmer to react on price fluctuations, extreme weather conditions and other unexpected conditions. It is also easier to practise gradual expansion. The analysis has shown that profitable and competitive systems exist which meet future requirements of animal welfare.
