Researching and Promoting the Industrial Uses of Soybeans

Abstract

The soybean is an amazing crop, it can be used whole as food or for a high-protein source of animal feed and a healthy choice for human consumption of necessary fats in the diet In the 1930s and 40s, industrial uses of soy were on the forefront for products such as adhesives and plastics, mh the advent of cheap petroleum and the growing use of beans for livestock feed and human consumption, however, the industrial side of the market became almost dormant. In the past few years, these environmentally friendly industrial uses for soy have come back into favor. The need for cleaner air and water is driving us to again look at soy for a myriad of industrial uses, from adhesives to plastics to crayons to solvents. This paper will chronicle how we have brought soy back into industrial uses and detail some of the products that are currently available and what is currently in active research.
