Abstract

This paper describes the management of a fairly typical Northern Natal, South Africa, Beef and Sheep farm. It will begin by describing and emphasising the veld (grassland) management system used since this is by far the cheapest resource available on the farm and hence optimum veld management has probably the single most impact on the long term profitability of the enterprise. The paper will also briefly describe the production systems used in the beef and sheep enterprises and how these systems relate to the veld management system. The maize and summer and winter pasture enterprises are supplementary to the main beef and sheep enterprises and shall be briefly included. Labour, purchasing and marketing management strategies will be indicated and finally some financial information will be presented to give a net return per R 1 000 of operating expenditure.
